Vol. 364 No. 4

Written Answers. - Enclosed Hare Coursing.

68.

asked the Minister for Tourism, Fisheries and Forestry if he will consider amending sections 23(7), 26(3) and 34(3) of the 1976 Wildlife Act so as to secure the abolition of enclosed hare coursing.

My Department's powers in relation to wildlife, including hares, derive from the Wildlife Act, 1976, which is a measure designed to ensure the conservation of wild fauna and flora and their habitats.

The Act permits continuation of traditional hunting of certain wild birds and wild animals, including hares, in a regulated manner where their population levels can sustain such exploitation.

As there is no indication that hares are in any danger of extinction no action under that Act in their regard is required or contemplated at present.
