Vol. 364 No. 10

Written Answers. - Tax Free Allowance.

106.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will give a complete review of the tax position of a person (details supplied) in County Westmeath as it is understood that an agreement was reached between him, his accountants and the Revenue Commissioners some years ago regarding tax allowances for travel expenses but this was not allowed and the present tax free allowance does not appear correct.

I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that an allowance in respect of travelling expenses was granted in error to the taxpayer for each of the years 1978-79 to 1982-83 on the basis of misleading information supplied to the inspector by the taxpayer's employer. The allowance in question was withdrawn following reviews of his liabilities for the relevant years and the total underpayment which emerged is being collected over a period of five years which commenced on 6 April 1984.
