Vol. 364 No. 10

Written Answers. - Grant Payments.

38.

asked the Minister for the Environment in view of the success of the Government's £5,000 grant scheme for local authority tenants surrendering their houses and the subsequent increase in the housing stock, particularly in parts of Dublin, if he will consider diverting part of the house building funds available to Dublin Corporation, such diverted funds to be used for building bathrooms for the houses which at present are without this basic requirement since the corporation can at the moment only hope to provide this facility for certain houses built before 1930 as in the case of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 12.

My Department provide loan finance to enable housing authorities to carry out improvement works, including the provision of bathrooms, to their rented housing stock. The capital provision for this scheme in 1986 is adequate to meet the requirements of local authorities including Dublin Corporation and consequently there is not a need for a diversion of funds along the lines suggested by the Deputy.

I should also mention that local authorities and tenants of local authority dwellings may qualify for bathroom grants of up to £800 under the 1985 house improvement grants scheme.
