asked the Minister for the Environment if he will give details of the total amount of money received by his Department in 1930, 1940, 1950, 1960, 1970, 1980 under the public auditing system; the number of staff involved in this section of his Department; and if he will make a statement on this matter.

At the end of October 1986 there were 44 staff employed in the local government audit service and arrangements are being made to recruit an additional four personnel.

I recently established an interdepartmental committee to undertake a comprehensive review of the local government audit service. The review is in progress at present.
