Vol. 374 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Operations.

37.

asked the Minister for Justice if, in view of public concern, he will make a statement regarding the circumstances in which some or all of the perpetrators of the theft of the so-called Beit paintings were allegedly surrounded in the Dublin mountains, and then allowed to escape.

It is not the practice for Ministers for Justice to make statements to the House about specific Garda operations except in singular instances where the circumstances of an operation, or some particular aspect of it, are so exceptional that such a course is deemed to be appropriate. I do not propose to make any statement about the particular matter referred to in the question except to say that I am not to be taken as agreeing with any inference contained in the question that the Garda performance in relation to this matter was in any way inadequate.
