Vol. 376 No. 6

Written Answers. - High-Voltage ESB Lines.

132.

asked the Minister for Education if she will meet as a matter of urgency a deputation of parents from a school (details supplied) in County Wicklow who wish to discuss with her the threat to the school as parents have grave doubts about continued attendance by their children at the school if the planned high-voltage ESB lines are allowed to be placed close to the school, over the playground, as is planned at present.

I understand that the ESB's proposal is to replace an existing high-tension transmission line which runs close to the school in question by another line of a higher voltage. I further understand that the ESB have given certain assurances to the school authorities and that a meeting with members of the school's board of management is to take place next week. My Department will be getting in touch with both the chairperson of the school's board of management and the ESB in order to establish the facts of the matter. After the meeting referred to has taken place, and if the issues are not by then resolved, I would be glad to arrange for a senior officer of my Department to meet representatives of the school's board of management to discuss the matter with them.
