Vol. 383 No. 4

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

122.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make a statement on the proposed upgrading and improvement of the sewerage system serving the town of Mountmellick, County Laois; and, having regard to numerous instances of flooding and escape of sewage effluent in residential areas of the town following above average rainfall which constitutes a health hazard of significant dimensions, if this matter will be treated as urgent in order to avert a crisis.

Preliminary proposals for improvements to the Mountmellick sewerage scheme were submitted to my Department by Laois County Council and were examined in the light of existing deficiencies in the present system. The council were advised in 1986 to submit revised proposals having regard to further investigations and remedial measures which they were asked to attend to. No revised proposals have yet been received in my Department.

123.

asked the Minister for the Environment the present position concerning the second stage of Blackrock/Haggardstown sewerage scheme, County Louth; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Contract documents for Stage 2 of the Blackrock/Haynestown sewerage scheme which will serve the Haggardstown area were approved in 1986. It is a matter for the county council to seek the necessary tenders for the various contracts and to submit them to my Department for approval in due course.
