Vol. 383 No. 4

Written Answers. - Facilities for Travelling People.

29.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he expects any reduction in the provision of facilities for travelling people by local authorities as a result of the reduction of £10 million in the relevant Vote in his Estimate for 1989; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am allocating £3 million for the provision of accommodation for travellers in 1989 from the overall allocation for local authority housing. This £3 million allocation is the same as the allocation in the current year and 1987. This is a mark of my determination to see that progress should be made on this very difficult social issue and it will enable activity to continue at the increased level which has been evident for the past few years. I am confident that the allocation provided will be sufficient to meet the demands for funding for this service.
