Vol. 385 No. 1

Written Answers. - Trade Union Amalgamations.

27.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of trade union amalgamations in 1987 and 1988.

In 1987 transfers of engagements took place from the National Association of Transport Employees to the Federated Workers' Union of Ireland and from the United Stationary Engine Drivers, Firemen, Cranemen, Motormen and Machinemen's Trade Union to the FWUI. This year the National Union of Woodworkers and Woodcutting Machinists and the Ancient Guild of Incorporated Brick and Stonelayers and Allied Trades' Union amalgamated to form the Building and Allied Trades' Union. These mergers took place in accordance with the terms of the Trade Union Act, 1975. In addition, in 1988 the Irish branches of ASTMS and TASS amalgamated as a consequence of the amalgamation of the parent unions in the UK to form the Manufacturing, Science and Finance Union.
