Vol. 385 No. 1

Written Answers. - Teaching of Irish.

99.

asked the Minister for Education the number of hours per day devoted to the teaching of Irish in national schools.

In keeping with the principles of flexibility and integration inherent in the structure of the new curriculum my Department do not lay down specific periods of time for various curriculum activities, but advise that a certain minimum time be spent on each aspect of the curriculum each day. As a general guideline, teachers would be expected to devote approximately five hours per week to the teaching of Irish in first to sixth standards.
