Vol. 390 No. 3

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

41.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if there is a pending application for disability benefit by a person (details supplied) in Dublin 24; when such an application was received; when a decision will be given; if this will be expedited in view of the urgent need of the person concerned; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

An application for disability benefit was received on 1 May 1989. A decision on the application was deferred pending a medical examination as the person concerned had been found capable of work in connection with his previous claim, by a medical referee of the Department who examined him on 9 January 1989 and again by a different medical referee on 27 February 1989.

Arrangements are being made to have him examined by a different medical referee on 1 June 1989. His entitlement to disability benefit will be decided in the light of the medical referee's report.

If the claimant's means are insufficient to meet his needs in the meantime, it is open to him to apply to the local community care officer for supplementary welfare allowance.
