Vol. 410 No. 6

Written Answers. - Control of Dogs.

Jim Mitchell

Question:

117 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for the Environment if, in view of the concerns expressed by the Irish Veterinary Association, the Irish Kennel Club, the ISPCA, the DSPCA and the Campaign Against Muzzling, he would be agreeable to their proposal to set up a working party representative of these organisations and his Department (1) to review, as a matter of urgency, the Control of Dogs (Restriction of Certain Dogs) Regulations, 1991 and to make recommendations for changes, (2) to make recommendations for changes and improvements in the laws relating to the ownership, control, registration, breeding and the importation of dogs and (3) to consider the implications of developments in the EC abolishing border controls and the measures for dogs; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As I indicated in the Adjournment Debate on 22 May, I am having legislation drafted to provide additional powers to deal more effectively with the problem of dangerous dogs. I will in the meantime be consulting with the various interests on various aspects of dog control.
