Vol. 413 No. 5

Written Answers. - Gaming and Lotteries Legislation.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

134 Mr. Byrne asked the Minister for Justice if he will amend Part IV, section 27 (3) of the Gaming and Lotteries Act, 1956 which limits a Superintendent of the Garda Síochána to issuing only one permit in six months to any one group, as there are thousands of voluntary and charitable bodies providing an important service at local level including groups collecting locally by way of weekly raffles for senior citizens; and his views on whether giving the local Garda Superintendent the power of discretion over the numbers of permits he wishes to issue to any one group, will save these voluntary agencies and groups having to go to the District Court which is the position at present.

I could not undertake to indicate, by way of reply to parliamentary questions, what specific legislative proposals I might have in a particular area. Any proposals I may have in relation to the subject matter of this question will be announced in the ordinary way in due course.
