Vol. 415 No. 3

Written Answers. - Silicone Breast Implants.

Bernard Allen

Question:

158 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health if she will make a statement on the United States Food and Drug Administration's report that silicone breast implants have caused problems to patients who have had the surgical procedure carried out in the United States; and if she will give details of the advice her Department have given to hospitals in this country that carry out such implants.

The United States Food and Drug Administration is currently investigating possible health risks associated with silicone gel in breast implant operations. It has recommended a suspension of silicone gel implants in breast implant operations until the results of this review are known.

Plastic surgeons in Ireland have decided to suspend usage of silicone breast implants until the United States review has been completed and they will reconsider the matter at that stage.
