Question:

168 Tomás Mac Giolla asked the Minister for Education if he will give details of the figures, for school enrolment at primary level, for (a) the 1991-92, (b) the 1992-93 and (c) the 1993-94 school years.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 167 and 168 together.

I regret that the information requested by the Deputy in relation to class sizes is not available, as statistical returns from all national schools have not yet been received by my Department and a considerable amount of processing of the returns is required in order to provide the information sought.

The provisional figure for total enrolments in national schools for September, 1991, is 533,931, giving a pupil-teacher ratio of 25.8 to 1.

Projected enrolments for the 1992-93 and 1993-94 school years are 518,700 and 500,130 respectively.
