Vol. 415 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Boards Appointments.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

187 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Education whether Roman Catholic religious or the nominee of Roman Catholic authorities who are appointed to school management boards, staff selection boards or similar positions in vocational schools and in other schools in receipt of public funding are required as a precondition of their appointment to declare, in the event of a conflict between the code of Canon Law as it affects them and constitutional and statute law, that they will abide by the latter; and, if not, the reasons they are not.

There is an inherent assumption that persons appointed in any of the capacities referred to will act in accordance with statute and constitutional law. In the circumstances I do not consider it appropriate that any person, lay or religious, should be asked to give an undertaking to that effect.
