Vol. 442 No. 10

Ceisteanna — Questions. Written Answers. - Game Angling Tourism Revenue.

Enda Kenny

Question:

42 Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the value in economic terms of the tourist game angling industry in the west and south west for each of the past five years; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Statistics on the value of game angling on a regional basis are not available. However, based on the number of short salmon licences sold to visiting anglers, the estimated tourism revenue from these visitors over the past five years in the West and South-West regions was as follows:

Ireland West

South-West

£

£

1989

635,000

175,000

1990

460,000

290,000

1991

372,000

360,000

1992

630,000

490,000

1993

615,000

560,000

This would include an element of sea trout fishing, but not brown trout, which is a significant product in the regions in question. It would be reasonable to assume that the tourism value of brown trout to the regions would be equal to that of salmon fishing.
Angling continues to be one of the most important specialist tourism products which Ireland has to offer.
