Vol. 467 No. 2

Written Answers. - Uninsured Motor Vehicles.

Ivor Callely

Question:

139 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the Garda Síochána calculations of the number of uninsured motor vehicles on the roads; the number of persons prosecuted for having no insurance in 1995; the comparative figure for 1990; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12976/96]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that statistics regarding the number of uninsured motor vehicles on the road are not compiled by them in such a way as to readily provide the details which the Deputy requests. However, the Garda Síochána conducted a survey in 1991 to estimate the extent to which vehicles are uninsured. This survey indicated that the national level of uninsured driving was about 6 per cent. A similar survey was also carried out recently. The results are not yet available.

With regard to the number of prosecutions for not having insurance, this information is published in the Commissioner's Annual Report on Crime, copies of which are available in the Oireachtas Library. The 1995 report will be published shortly.
