Vol. 467 No. 2

Written Answers. - Students Summer Jobs Scheme Application.

Liam Fitzgerald

Question:

148 Mr. L. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will sanction a place on the student summer job scheme in respect of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 5 in view of the particular circumstances involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13041/96]

The underlying purpose of the scheme is to provide income support for the less well off third level students who are disqualified from receiving unemployment assistance and are unable to obtain summer work.

Priority, therefore, is being given to enabling the maximum number of eligible students who have no other means of support to participate within the overall financial allocation for the 1996 scheme.

As the person concerned has completed a course of studies at the regional technical college, Letterkenny he is entitled to claim unemployment assistance if he cannot find work during the summer period. For the reasons already stated, he is not, therefore, eligible to participate in the scheme.
