Vol. 472 No. 4

Written Answers. - Worked-Out Mines.

Robert Molloy

Question:

163 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the action, if any, being taken on the recommendation by the National Minerals Policy Review Group Report that consideration be given to using worked-out mines as heritage tourist attractions; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23522/96]

Cost, environmental and safety considerations will obviously determine the scope for using any worked-out or abandoned mines as heritage tourist attractions. I share the review group's concern to publicise Ireland's significant mining history and mining expertise but I regret that my Department has no funds for that purpose.

Given that Ireland's mining history dates back to the Bronze Age — 2000-500 BC — there are many worked-out or abandoned mines throughout the country. Their condition varies considerably according to their history and geology. It is primarily a matter for local tourism and heritage interests to consider whether any worked-out or abandoned mine could affordably, environmentally and safely be used as a heritage tourist attraction, for which planing permission would be needed.
