John Gormley

Question:

96 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the number of nominations that can be made, through his Department, to the boards of semi-State bodies and other Government agencies; the current holders of these nominations; and the terms of office they are currently serving. [22930/97]

There are six State boards-agencies which come under the aegis of the Department of Foreign Affairs. These are: Ageny for Personnel Service Overseas, APSO; Cultural Relations Committee, CRC; Irish Aid Advisory Committee, IAAC; the National Committee for Development Education, NCDE; the Refugee Agency, and Joint Department of Foreign Affairs-NGO Standing Committee on Human Rights.

The information requested by the Deputy in relation to these State boards-agencies is as follows:

APSO (Agency for Personnel Services Overseas):

All 11 members of the board of APSO are nominated by the Minister for Foreign Affairs. The current board members and their terms of appointment are as follows:

Apart from Mr. Niall Tobin the current term of office of the other members of committee has expired and a new committee will shortly be appointed.
NCDE (National Committee for Development Education)
The members of the National Committee for Development Education are appointed by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and include a chairperson, members nominated by various bodies representing the various sectors involved in development education and a small number of invited experts. There were 17 persons on the outgoing committee, including the chairperson. The term of the current committee which was for three years has expired and a new committee will be appointed shortly.

It is intended that one additional place on the committee will be filled in due course on a rotational basis by the solidarity groups.
