Vol. 486 No. 2

Written Answers. - Dyspraxia Incidence.

David Stanton

Question:

142 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Health and Children the symptoms recognised by his Department when defining and diagnosing the condition known as dyspraxia; the prevalence of this condition as described; the strategies and resources, if any, which his Department is using or plans to use in order to support families with children who are diagnosed as suffering from dyspraxia. [2325/98]

Dyspraxia is the impairment of the ability to perform co-ordinated movements and can result from a variety of neurological conditions. It is a clinical diagnosis made by a clinician in the light of presenting complaints by individual patients. There is no database or information source available which describes the prevalence of the condition. Services to persons with this condition would be provided by the health boards or by non-Government organisations on behalf of boards as part of the generic community services.
