Vol. 514 No. 2

Written Answers. - Radon Gas Levels.

Michael Ring

Question:

130 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science the schools in County Mayo which were found to have radon levels in excess of permitted levels in the recent survey by the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland; if he will give details of these schools; if he has been in contact with these schools to appraise them of the situation; if funds will be made available by his Department to fully fund the remedial works; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3813/00]

The survey of radon levels in all primary and post-primary schools in the country, commissioned by my Department is being conducted in three phases. The survey involves recording the concentration of radon gas present in a school over an academic year.

Schools in Mayo are being surveyed in the second phase which is being conducted over the current academic year, 1999-2000. Following completion of this phase the Radiological Institute of Ireland will collate and issue the results to participating schools.

My Department will meet the cost of mitigation where this may prove necessary.
