Vol. 528 No. 1

Written Answers. - Train Service.

Deirdre Clune

Question:

112 Ms Clune asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the plans she has to provide additional trains on the Cork-Dublin-Cork route in view of the serious overcrowding that exists on many journeys at present; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [29479/00]

The allocation of trains to particular lines is a day-to-day operational matter for Iarnród Éireann.

The national development plan provides for the purchase of additional and replacement mainline rail rolling stock over the life of the plan. Iarnród Éireann is currently undertaking a tender process for the purchase of new train sets for intercity routes. These train sets are being ordered in two equal tranches of 20. Delivery of these new carriages is expected in 2002-03.

I should also point out that the coming into service of 20 new diesel rail-cars for Arrow services over the coming weeks will have the effect of freeing up some Dublin outer-suburban rolling stock for use on intercity, routes particularly at weekends.
