Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Psychological Service.

Michael D. Higgins

Question:

1232 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Education and Science if his Department will reimburse St. Mary's junior school, Clondalkin, Dublin 22 for the costs accrued by the school in its efforts to provide an interim psychological service before his Department appointed one; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1941/01]

Due to an unforeseen career break, the level of service provided by the National Educational Psychological Service to the school named by the Deputy was not maintained in recent times. However, I am happy to inform the Deputy that a replacement psychologist has now been assigned to the school and, following discussions with the principal, will be in a position to provide a service to the school.

I am aware of the difficulties that some schools have experienced, pending the appointment of the full quota of psychologists for NEPS. Unfortunately, my Department is unable at present to provide payments for private assessments.
