Vol. 539 No. 3

Written Answers. - Neighbourhood Watch Scheme.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

176 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if a request from a residents association (details supplied) for assistance with developing a neighbourhood watch in their area has been approved. [19401/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that a neighbourhood watch scheme was re-launched in the area in question on 9 April 2001. At present, the area is policed by the mainstream policing units attached to Terenure Garda station, while also receiving attention from a dedicated community policing unit of one sergeant and seven gardaí from the district.

The Garda authorities have informed me that it is not currently possible to allocate a full-time community garda to the area but that this situation will be reviewed later in the year. The Deputy will appreciate that the allocation of Garda resources is an operational matter for the Garda Commissioner.
