The Falcarragh and Gortahork sewerage schemes were included as priorities 36 and 37, respectively, on the list of water and sewerage schemes submitted by Donegal County Council in response to my Department's request to local authorities to undertake a fresh assessment of the needs for capital works in their areas and to prioritise their proposals on the basis of the assessments. The priority lists were taken into account in the framing of the water services investment programme 2000/02 announced in July 2000. Given the priority afforded to the schemes by the council, the level of competing demand and the funding available, it has not been possible to include them in the programme. However, certain water and sewerage works to facilitate residential development in Falcarragh have been approved under the serviced land initiative, at an estimated cost of £410,000 (520,000). The relevant sewer contract is due to commence this month.
