Vol. 545 No. 5

Written Answers. - Third-Level Fees.

Beverley Flynn

Question:

183 Ms Cooper-Flynn asked the Minister for Education and Science if a person (details supplied) in County Mayo will be refunded fees paid when offered a place on a course in Trinity College. [31048/01]

Under the terms of my Department's free fees initiative, the Exchequer meets the tuition fees of eligible students who are attending approved full-time undergraduate courses, which must generally be of at least two years duration at approved colleges.

Eligibility under the initiative is subject to a number of conditions. For example, students who are repeating a year level or who already have a degree are generally not eligible for funding.

Universities are autonomous institutions and, where a student is not eligible to benefit under the free fees criteria, as in the case referred to by the Deputy, issues relating to the payment and refund of tuition fees are a matter for each university.
