Written Answers. - Drug Use.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

418 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will make a statement on complaints he has received regarding smoking of illegal drugs on public buses. [9881/02]

Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform (Mr. O'Donoghue): I would like to inform the Deputy that I received a copy of the correspondence concerning the alleged smoking of illegal drugs on Dublin Bus. Both the Garda authorities and I are fully committed to tackling drug misuse and appropriate action is taken by the gardaí when specific complaints are received.
I am informed by the gardaí that Dublin Bus have not made any specific complaints concerning the smoking of illegal drugs on public buses. However the gardaí liaise on an ongoing basis with Dublin Bus and intend to pursue the matter with the company through the appropriate channel. I also understand that my colleague, the Minister for Public Enterprise, has made arrangements for a copy of the correspondence to be forwarded to Dublin Bus for direct reply.
