Vol. 561 No. 1

Written Answers. - Death Certificates.

John McGuinness

Question:

411 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Health and Children the reason a death certificate has not been issued to a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny relating to their sister; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3724/03]

The administration of the registration system is statutorily a matter for An tArd-Chláraitheoir of Births, Deaths and Marriages and for registrars who operate under his general direction. I have had enquiries made with An tArd-Chláraitheoir and he has informed me that the death mentioned by the Deputy was referred to the coroner. I understand that a post mortem examination has been held but that an inquest has yet to be arranged. In these circumstances the registrar must await the issue of a coroner's certificate before registering the death. When the death has been registered the registrar may issue a certified copy of the entry in the register of deaths.

Question No. 412 answered with Question No. 393.
