Jan O'Sullivan

Question:

151 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Education and Science when he expects to receive the review of the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse, being carried out by Mr. Sean Ryan, SC; if the timescale of eight weeks as outlined in Dáil Éireann on 2 October 2003 is being met; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29425/03]

The Government recently announced the appointment of Mr. Sean Ryan, Senior Counsel, as the chairperson designate of the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse. Mr. Ryan is currently carrying out a review of the work of the commission and in carrying out this review he will take account of the interests of victims of abuse and the need for the commission to complete its work within a reasonable timescale and in a manner consistent with a proper investigation, without incurring exorbitant costs. I am aware that Mr. Ryan is progressing the matter and I expect that his review will be completed shortly.
