179. Deputy Seán Kyne asked the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs her plans to extend the age to which the State provides care to children in State care from 17 to 18. [40023/13]
View answerUnder Section 3 of the Child Care Act 1991, the HSE has a statutory duty to promote the welfare of children who are not receiving adequate care and protection. Section 2 of this Act defines a child as "a person under the age of 18 years other than a person who is or has been married." The changes proposed by the Deputy are not required, as a child may remain in care until they reach 18 years of age, should this be deemed necessary.
