160. Deputy Sean Fleming asked the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs the number of defined benefit pension schemes currently listed for employees under his remit; the number that are in deficit; his plans to consolidate any of these schemes; and if he will make a statement on the matter. There are eight public service defined benefit schemes in operation across my Department and agencies under its remit. All schemes operate on a “pay as you go” basis and the question of deficits does not therefore arise.

Seven of the schemes are legacy schemes in that they apply only to civil or public servants employed prior to January 2013. Since January 2013, all new entrants are members of the Single Public Service Pension Scheme in accordance with the Public Service Pensions (Single Scheme and Other Provisions) Act 2012.
