Questions (266)

John Lahart

Question:

266. Deputy John Lahart asked the Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth the reason he did not avail of an opportunity to meet with local public representatives and national representatives on his recent visit to Tallaght, where there has been an anxiety to quietly and safely discuss his Department’s proposals for St. John’s in Tallaght and its repurposing as a migrant/asylum seeker’s hub; if he would be minded to have such a meeting in the very near future to help local public representatives convey accurate and credible information to the local business population in particular; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Ireland continues to experience a sustained and unprecedented increase in people seeking International Protection (IP). There are currently over 29,000 people accommodated in the International Protection Accommodation Service (IPAS) system as a whole (of whom approximately 7,000 are children) compared with approximately 8,700 people at the end of February 2022. In keeping with its legal obligations, the Government is committed to supporting all those seeking refuge in Ireland and is considering all offers of accommodation.

The Community Engagement Team (CET) was established to engage directly with elected representatives, relevant Local Authorities, Local Development Companies, and other entities and individuals.

The purpose of the team is to improve the flow of information regarding arrivals into areas and to help equip local communities with the accurate information required to help them understand the current situation and to assist with the welcome and integration process for new arrivals.

In response to requests from a number of TDs, the Department can confirm that the CET will convene a meeting, at an agreed date, with public representatives to discuss the proposed use of St John’s Tallaght to accommodate people seeking international protection. A full briefing note regarding the use of this property will also issue shortly to all local public representatives, the Local Authority and the Local Development Company.
