The visit by the Ceann Comhairle, Deputy Seán Ó Feargháil, comes in the 66th year of diplomatic relations between Ireland and Japan.

The Ceann Comhairle met the speakers of Japan's House of Representatives and its House of Councillors. Responding to the welcome by Speaker Hosoda Hiroyuki, the Ceann Comhairle indicated his hope that further exchange between both parliaments, including the parliamentary leagues of friendship, will lead to more activity.

The Ceann Comhairle also met members of the Irish community and reviewed various Irish-Japanese joint projects on his visit.

The delegation visited the peace memorial at Hiroshima, the site of an atomic bombing in 1945, where the Ceann Comhairle met survivors and laid a wreath in what was a deeply moving occasion.
