The Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann, Senator Jerry Buttimer, has led a ceremony on Leinster Lawn to remember the lives Ireland lost because of coronavirus.

In planting a native cherry tree, the Cathaoirleach indicated his hope that the annual blossoms would be an ongoing symbol of remembrance and hope in Leinster House.

Speaking at the event, which was attended by Members and staff, the Cathaoirleach said: "We plant this tree in remembrance of the people who lost their lives during the pandemic. In Irish mythology, trees represented wisdom, truth and courage while the cherry tree specifically represents the beauty and fragility of life. I hope this tree gives comfort, joy and hope to all who pass it by. Our thoughts remain with those families and friends who have lost loved ones to Covid-19.”
