28 Feb 2012, 12:31

The Defence Ombudsman will address the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Investigations, Oversight and Petitions tomorrow afternoon,Wednesday 29 February. Paulyn Marrinan Quinn SC, Ombudsman for the Defence Forces will brief the Committee on the work of her office.

Established in law in 2004, the Office provides serving and former members members of permanent and reserve Defence Forces with a channel to appeal complaints they believe have not been adequately addressed internally.

Cathaoirleach of the Committee, Peadar Tóibín TD, said: “The Committee looks forward to meeting with the Defence Forces Ombudsman on her important work.

“A Committee report on its new role, published earlier last month, provided that it may liaise with other Ombudsmen, regulatory public bodies or bodies established for the purpose of redress. This will be the first such meeting with an Ombudsman since that report launch, in which we will explore the synergies that may exist between her office and our Committee.

“The meeting will serve as a timely opportunity to explore how our Committee and her office can work together to enhance parliamentary oversight, particularly in the area of administrative accountability.”

This meeting will take place tomorrow Wednesday 29 February, in Committee Room 1 Leinster House 2000 at 4 p.m.
