EU Affairs Committee welcomes Fiscal Treaty referendum announcement

28 Feb 2012, 16:02

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs welcomes the announcement today by the Taoiseach and Tánaiste of a referendum on the new EU Fiscal Treaty, agreed by 25 Member States, including Ireland, on 30 January. The Taoiseach said that arrangements for a vote would be made in the coming weeks.

Chairman of the Committee Dominic Hannigan TD said: “We welcome the clarity provided by the announcement from the Taoiseach and Tánaiste today that the Fiscal Treaty will be put to the Irish people. The decision on ratification, or otherwise, of the new Fiscal Treaty will have substantial implications for Ireland.

“Our cross-party Committee intends to lead a national debate on the new Treaty, debating its merits in a comprehensive, clearheaded and inclusive manner.  To the forefront of Committee Members’ considerations will be the impact of the vote on the daily lives of citizens on the ground.

“In considering the Treaty, the Committee intends to take the debate beyond Leinster House and engage with citizens on the ground. In this regard, we invite submissions from individual members of the public and organisations, who wish to make known their views on the Treaty and its implications for Ireland.”
