Agriculture Committee to meet Teagasc representatives

5 Mar 2012, 16:16

The Joint Committee on Communications, Natural Resources and Agriculture will meet with representatives from Teagasc tomorrow afternoon Tuesday 6 March.

As the agriculture and food development authority, Teagasc’s stated mission is to support science-based innovation in the agri-food sector and the broader bioeconomy that will underpin profitability, competitiveness and sustainability.

Chairman of the Oireachtas Joint Committee Andrew Doyle TD said: “Our Committee has an important role in oversight of statutory bodies and tomorrow’s meeting is an opportunity to question representatives from Teagasc on their current work priorities.

\"With an operating budget of €160 million and 1,200 staff, Teagasc has a substantial impact on agriculture in Ireland through its research, knowledge transfer and education programmes.

“The agri-food sector is increasingly seen as a key driver of national economic recovery and this renewed interest has seen demand for agriculture courses offered by Teagasc increase by about 80 percent between 2006 and 2010. The meeting tomorrow will provide an opportunity for Members to tease out these and other matters related to Teagasc’s wide-ranging work.”

The meeting will begin with the Committee exploring a series of EU legislative proposals relating to the management of fish stocks. It takes place at 1:30 pm tomorrow 6 March in Committee Room 3, LH 2000.
