Oireachtas Committee to discuss Bord Iascaigh Mhara annual report

10 Jul 2013, 15:29

Representatives from Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) are before the Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine to consider their agency’s 2011 Annual Report.

10 July 2013

BIM is the State agency with responsibility for developing the Irish sea fishing and aquaculture industries.

Committee Chairman Andrew Doyle TD says: “The seafood industry is worth about €750 million to the Irish economy annually and Bord Iascaigh Mhara is the State agency responsible for supporting and developing the industry across a range of sectors. Much of this economic activity takes place in peripheral coastal communities. The 2011 annual report outlines the agency’s contribution to efforts to reach the Harvest 2020 targets of €1 billion in revenue, which includes a 78 percent increase in aquaculture volume production. Our Committee looks forward to exploring with BIM representatives tomorrow how the sustainable harnessing of our seafood potential can assist in Ireland's economic recovery.”

The meeting takes place this afternoon Thursday 11 July 2012 at 9:30 am in Committee Room 4 LH 2000.
