15 Jul 2013, 17:11

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on EU Affairs will meet with David Kitching of the Foundation for European Progressive Studies tomorrow 16 July as part of its series of discussions on the future of the European Union.

15 July 2013

The meeting will have a particular focus on strengthening democratic legitimacy and accountability in the EU.

Chairman of the Committee Dominic Hannigan TD says: “In recent months our Committee has debated widely on how to secure democratic legitimacy and accountability in an evolving European Union. David Kitching will tomorrow outline his work with the Foundation for European Progressive Studies, a leading Brussels-based think tank which has links to the Party of European Socialists.

\"FEPS describes itself as establishing an intellectual crossroad between social democracy and the European project, putting fresh thinking at the core of its action. With the European social model coming under increasing strain in the straitened financial times of recent years, Committee Members will be keen to hear a social democratic perspective on how the social safety net for European citizens in past decades can be sustained.\"

The meeting takes place at 3pm tomorrow afternoon Tuesday 16 July in Committee Room 1, LH 2000. Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
