Jobs Committee to discuss EU scrutiny report and progress on Ireland’s EU Presidency priorities

15 Jul 2013, 13:26

Secretary General at the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation John Murphy will attend the meeting of the Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation tomorrow, Tuesday, 16th July 2013 to discuss the Departmental Six-Monthly EU Scrutiny Report.

The Committee will also review progress made on the priorities of the Irish EU Presidency in the area of jobs.

Chairman of the Committee Deputy Damien English said: “Under the terms of the European Union (Scrutiny Act) 2002, Ministers submit reports to the Oireachtas every six months on developments at European Union level in their area of responsibility. The Departmental Six-Monthly EU Scrutiny Report we will examine with the Secretary General tomorrow is for the July 2012 to December 2012 period during which Cyprus held the Presidency of the European Union and it summarises the key legislative and policy developments during those six months.”

We will also get a chance to review progress made on the priorities of the Irish EU Presidency in the area of jobs, enterprise and innovation. Ireland’s presidency of the EU has been generally accepted as very successful, so it is both timely and fitting that we receive a briefing on issues in relation to jobs that were addressed over the past six months. One of the key decisions agreed at European Council summit at the end of June, was to earmark €8 billion for the Youth Guarantee Scheme in the six countries worst effected by youth unemployment. The establishment of a Youth Guarantee in Ireland in the shortest possible timeframe to help tackle the serious problem of youth and long-term unemployment was the key recommendation of our Committee’s report, Creating Policies That Work – Actions to Address Youth and Long-Term Unemployment, which was published in February. We’re looking forward to discussing the funding for youth guarantee schemes and other developments in the area of jobs and enterprise during Ireland’s presidency of the EU.”

This Committee meeting will start at 1.30pm on Tuesday, 16th July 2013 in Committee Room 2, Leinster House.
