Education Committee to meet Minister on Budget 2014

16 Jul 2013, 18:03

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Education and Social Protection will tomorrow meet with the Minister for Education and Skills Ruairi Quinn TD for a briefing on the upcoming budget.

16 July 2013

Minister of State for Training and Skills Ciaran Cannon TD will also attend.

The Programme for Government stipulates that Committees examine Estimates on a whole-of-year basis, and this meeting forms part of that initiative. Last week, the Committee engaged with Minister Joan Burton TD in line with its remit in shadowing the work of the Department of Social Protection.

Committee Chair Joanna Tuffy TD says: “Pre-budget engagement with the Minister is an important component this Committee’s work and we will wish to explore how the current budgetary challenges facing the State will impact on the budget of the Department of Education and Skills. While the Minister may not be in a position to give precise details, the meeting will allow Committee members to question him on the likely general thrust of the education budget for 2014 across primary, secondary, skills development, and third level sectors.

\"As with other Government Departments, significant savings are expected in education spending in the upcoming budget. Given the importance of the education system in enabling individuals to reach their full potential and in contributing to our national economic recovery, our Committee will be keen to question Minister Quinn on how the impact of the any adjustments can be minimised.”

The meeting takes place at 1 pm tomorrow afternoon Wednesday 17 July in Committee Room 3. Committee proceedings can be followed live here
