Agriculture Committee to meet Minister on EU Presidency outcomes

17 Jul 2013, 17:29

The Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine tomorrow meets with Minister Simon Coveney TD to discuss the achievements of the Irish Presidency of the EU on the Common Agricultural and Common Fisheries Policies.

17 July 2013

Ireland held the EU Presidency in the first half of 2013 and concluded long running talks on both the CAP and CFP.

Chairman of the Committee Andrew Doyle TD says: “Tomorrow's meeting is a timely opportunity to reflect with Minister Coveney on what has been generally regarded as a successful conclusion to both the CAP and CFP talks under Ireland's tenure. As part of this Committee's contribution to the negotiation process, we hosted a meeting of Chairs of agriculture and fisheries committees from national parliaments across the European Union in Dublin in March, which was attended by Minister Coveney and Commissioners for Agriculture Dacian Ciolos and for Fisheries Maria Damanaki.

\"With the European Parliament playing a integral role in the process for the first time, it has been generally acknowledged that the Irish Presidency has finalised these two policies in a manner which has secured a fairer  system of support for both farmers and fishermen. With Harvest 2020 targets looming, the Committee will be keen to assess the prospects for Ireland's agri-food industry as a result of the deals struck in June. The policies have a considerable economic and social dimension for rural and coastal communities in Ireland and we will also wish to consider the likely impact for farming and fishing families nationwide.\"

The meeting takes place tomorrow morning 18 July 2012 at 9:30 am in Committee Room 4 LH 2000.
