Oireachtas Committee to hear case for nuclear energy

22 Oct 2013, 14:42

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications will tomorrow hear the case for nuclear energy in Ireland when it meets with the representatives from the Better Environment with Nuclear Energy.

22 October 2013
The Committee, which shadows the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, will hear from a group which aims to persuade government, policy makers, industry and the public of the benefits of nuclear power.

Presenting to the Committee will be Chartered Engineers Dr Tom O'Flaherty, Frank Turvey, Denis Duff as well as Prof Philip Walton, Emeritus Professor of Applied Physics at NUI, Galway.

Chairman of the Committee John O’Mahony TD says: “Nuclear energy has long been a controversial and emotive topic in Ireland. However, with the challenge of climate change looming ever larger, it is important that this Committee explores all energy options open to Ireland. The representatives of Better Environment with Nuclear Energy have considerable experience and expertise and are expected to present their genuine reasons why they feel nuclear power is the way forward for Ireland.\"

Separately, the Committee will consider COM (2013) 627, which sets out measures to achieve a single market for electronic communications. Officials from the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources and the ComReg will assist the Committee in scrutiny of the EU legislative proposal.

Deputy O’Mahony continues: “This proposal is perhaps the most ambitious and significant legislative measure in the telecoms sector in the EU for the past 26 years. The meeting tomorrow will provide an opportunity for the Committee to carefully consider the proposal with Department Officials and its impact on Ireland.\"

The meeting commences at 9:30 am tomorrow Wednesday 16 October in Committee Room 4, LH 2000. Committee proceedings will be followed here:
