Jobs Committee to focus on microfinance for small business

11 Nov 2013, 10:54

Representatives from Microfinance Ireland will come before the Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation tomorrow, Tuesday, 12th November 2013 to discuss progress made since the not-for-profit lender was set up to deliver the Government’s Microenterprise Loan Fund.

Committee Chairman Damien English TD said: “Microfinance Ireland was established as a not-for-profit lender to deliver the Government’s Microenterprise Loan Fund. The objective of Microfinance Ireland is to provide additional lending to start-up, newly established or growing microenterprises that have commercially viable proposals but do not meet conventional risk criteria applied by commercial banks. We have all heard many businesses, particularly small businesses and start-ups, say they are finding it difficult to access credit from banks. At our meeting tomorrow with Microfinance Ireland we will have an opportunity to consider how the needs of start-ups and micro-enterprises are being met by the organisation and discuss its progress to date in providing the necessary credit for businesses to start-up, expand and create much-needed jobs.”

This meeting will be held in Committee Room 2, Leinster House at 1.30pm on Tuesday 12th November 2013.

Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
