Sub Committee to consider General Scheme of the Official Languages (Amendment) Bill 2014

The General Scheme of the Official Languages (Amendment) Bill 2014 will be on the agenda of the Sub-Committee on the 20 Year Strategy for the Irish Language and Related Matters when it meets with a wide selection of interested groups and individuals at its meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, 27th May 2014.

The schedule for tomorrow’s meeting is:

10am – Representatives from the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht;
11.30am - The National University of Ireland Galway, Dublin City University (Fiontar), Foras na Gaeilge, An Coimisinéir Teanga
2.15pm - Conradh na Gaeilge, Comhluadar, Comhlachas na gComharchumann Gaeltachta, Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge, An Chomhairle um Oideachas Gaeltachta agus Gaelscolaíochta

Committee Cathaoirleach Michael McCarthy TD said: “The primary aim of the Bill is to amend the Official Languages Act 2003 to ensure that it continues to be an effective support to everyone who wishes to avail of high quality services in Irish from the State. The Minister of State for the Gaeltacht, Dinny McGinley TD, has forwarded the Heads of the Bill to the Joint Committee on the Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht for debate. Tomorrow, we are looking forward to hearing from a wide variety of interested parties and organisations to get their perspectives on the draft Heads of Bill and carrying out detailed consideration and pre-legislative scrutiny of the Bill.”

The meeting will start in Room 4 at 10am on Tuesday, 27th May 2014.
