3 October 2016

The Joint Committee on European Affairs will tomorrow meet with the Minister of State for European Affairs, E.U. Digital Single Market and Data Protection, Dara Murphy TD. The Committee will hear an update on the work of the General Affairs Council (GAC), including the results of the Bratislava Summit, and the decision of the United Kingdom to withdraw from the European Union.

The meeting will commence at 5.00pm in Committee Room 2 tomorrow, Tuesday, 4 October 2016.

Committee Chairman, Michael Healy-Rae TD, said “Our first engagement with Minister Murphy is a welcome one and one which comes at a time when the United Kingdom has now set-out a timeline for initiating formal withdrawal negotiations. The Committee looks forward to hearing an update on Government plans to manage this transition and how best we can limit the impact which this will have on our own economy.”

“The Committee will also receive an update on recent and upcoming General Affairs Council (GAC) meetings and on the Bratislava Summit. The GAC, which is mainly made up of the European affairs ministers from EU member states, coordinates preparations for European Council meetings and comes at a time where issues such as the UK withdrawal and migration are key issues for debate. We now welcome the opportunity to hear from Minister Murphy on this ongoing work.”
