18 Oct 2016, 17:27

The Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement will meet tomorrow, Thursday, 20th October 2016 at 2pm in Committee Room 3, Leinster House.

19th October 2016

The Committee will be discussing the implications of Brexit for the Good Friday Agreement and its institutions.

The following witnesses will brief the Committee:

• Dr. Anthony Soares, Deputy Director, The Centre for Cross Border Studies;

• Mr. Peter Sheridan, Chief Executive, Cooperation Ireland.

Committee Chairperson, Kathleen Funchion TD said: “Tomorrow’s meeting will focus how best to ensure the interests of the North in the face of Brexit. It is not yet clear how the peace process will be impacted by Brexit, but our Committee are keen to ensure that issues around the border are addressed, as well as subsequent concerns on issues such as EU funding. Now more than ever, cooperation will be vital to ensure that the gains of the peace process are maintained.”

“Committee Members are aware of the tensions that could materialise as a result of uncertainties about the nature of the border. Tomorrow’s meeting will be an opportunity for us to ensure that the interests of the border region remain central to the deliberations on Brexit.”

Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
