European Union Affairs Committee to meet with Maltese Foreign Affairs Director General

6 Dec 2016, 09:39

The Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will tomorrow meet with Ms. Helga Mizzi, Director General for Political EU Affairs and Maltese Abroad, of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Malta.

6 December 2016

The Committee will discuss the priorities and position of Member States of the European Union on the UK's withdrawal from the European Union.

The meeting will commence at 2.00pm in Committee Room 1 tomorrow, Wednesday, 7 December 2016.

Committee Chairman, Michael Healy Rae TD, said “This is the latest in a series of meetings where we will examine the UK's withdrawal from the European Union with representatives of the individual Members States. Malta will hold the presidency of the Council of the EU from January 2017 and, as is the practice, is currently working with the 2016 presidents – the Netherlands and Slovakia – in setting and preparing long term goals that will be addressed by the Council over an 18th month period.”

“It follows on from our excellent engagement with His Excellency Mr. Dušan Matulay, Ambassador of the Slovak Republic to Ireland and His Excellency Mr. Paul Schellekens, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Ireland where, as a Committee, we heard about their priorities and goals for the Council, including the challenges posed by the most recent referendum result in the UK.”
